Hartford Union High School's Day of Service

Hartford Union High School's Day of Service is Wednesday, May 20. Students, teachers and administrators are out giving back through volunteering.

Projects for the Day of Service are planned with the goal of contributing to the positive spirit of the community.

Hartford Union High School Director of Communications Laura Trapp served as one of the many advisors, with 30 students in the downtown Hartford area. She stopped by the WTKM studios to talk about why they hold a Day of Service every year.

"Our mission at the high school is to contribute to the global society and we want our kids to reach beyond the school walls. We want them to explore their passions and give back. We are hoping that volunteerism is something that we can instill in the students."

Planning for the Day of Service begins in October, according to Trapp and the students have a choice.

"We break it down into indoor work or outdoor work. Students do get to make that choice and we try to place them the best we can. It is also about kids meeting new kids. A student might be assigned to a group where they don't know anybody. They can make new friends along with meeting new teachers. It opens up so many pathways for kids."

Hartford Union High School sophomore Dayne Rhyner joined Mrs. Trapp for a visit on WTKM. She told us where she was assigned.

"I'm volunteering downtown with the Volunteers for a Beautiful Hartford. We are by the River Walk and we have been edging by the trees, mulching and weeding. Some people are planting flowers. Energy is high and everyone is feeling great."

Rhyner told WTKM that the Day of Service is important.

"I think it's extremely important for the students. It gives everyone an opportunity to get involved with volunteering. There can be a stigma that high schoolers aren't willing to work, especially if it is volunteer work. I can honestly say that everyone loves Day of Service."

These projects make a difference in the community and instill a sense of pride in the students and staff through giving back.
