Busy Memorial Day weekend travel expected

Memorial Day travel is expected to be busy across Wisconsin and the rest of the country.

AAA projects about 834,000 Wisconsin residents will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Nearly 45 million Americans are expected to travel, which is the highest Memorial Day travel volume on record.

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt told WTKM that deputies will be working hard to enforce the law over the weekend.

"It's a busy travel period, with Memorial Day weekend. It's certainly about honoring the men and women who gave their lives to our country. Memorial Day really marks that unofficial start to the summer travel season. Our roads become even more busy with vacation traffic and our goal is simple, we want to help everyone get to where they are going safely."

AAA says more than 744,000 people in Wisconsin will travel through this weekend, to Monday, May 25. Another 44,000 are expected to fly.

AAA expects the heaviest traffic to build today.
