It's great to see our dogs running around outside this time of the year. Precautions need to be implemented during hot and humid days.
Dogs primarily cool themselves through panting rather than sweating, they are highly susceptible to heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke. It's important to have water available for them at all times and provide a cool space with air conditioning, according to the VCA Saukville Animal Hospital, in Saukville, Wisconsin.
Limit strenuous outdoor activity to early mornings or late evenings when it is cooler.
An expected high temperature of 93 degrees is expected on Monday, June 29 and 94 degrees on Tuesday, June 30. Expect 95 degrees on Wednesday, July 1.
If your dog shows any of the following, they are experiencing an emergency:
- Excessive or violent panting and drooling
- Bright red gums and tongue
- Lethargy, staggering, or confusion
- Vomiting
- If a dog experiences loss of consciousness or extreme physical weakness
