Picnic planned for Veterans and military families

The Veteran's and Military Family Appreciation Picnic is Tuesday, July 21 at Hartford Town Hall. The 5th annual event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

All Veterans and military families are invited. It's sponsored by the VFW Hartford Post 8834.

Hartford VFW member and past State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Wisconsin Mike Eggleston came up with the idea for a picnic to honor the families.

"Serving as the state commander, I traveled all across the state and visited with Veterans groups. All of the communities are very thankful for Veterans, what they do and the sacrifices they made. And it's great, but not too much notice is given to the families, to the wives, to the spouses, to the kids and grandkids. When I came back, I approached the Hartford VFW Post about starting a picnic in appreciation of family members."

They are extending the invitation across Washington County to Allenton, Slinger, West Bend and Jackson. It's a great opportunity for Veterans to get to know each other.

There will be a magic show, jump house and games for the kids.

The Hartford VFW Post 8834 received funding assistance for the picnic from a State VFW grant, Casey's Convenience Store and Hartford's Piggly Wiggly.

A free meal will be served.
