Colors abound

It's certainly shaping up to be a colorful fall around Wisconsin.

Fall Foliage reports say the north woods and Bayfield turned first in late September and early this month, while southern Wisconsin and the Madison area continues to create bold colors throughout October.

Northern Wisconsin has reached, or is certainly near peak fall foliage, while central and southeran parts of the state are still developing.

Leaves are usually green during the growing season because they contain chlorophyll, which is a pigment that helps trees use sunlight to produce energy. Shorter days and cooler temperatures during autumn mean trees are preparing for winter. They gradually stop producing chlorophyll, allowing other pigments that were already present in the leaves to become visible.
