Harvests underway in Wisconsin

Category: Local News

Corn silage and soybean harvests are well underway in Wisconsin with favorable overall crop progress as of late last month, and early this month.

Waukesha County Farm Bureau Vice President Jim Renn told WTKM how things are going on his family farm.

"A lot of soybeans have come off in the last couple of weeks. Soybeans dry down naturally. Thirteen percent is where they need to be, so if we get rain they actually absorb that moisture."

Corn for silage harvest is ahead of the 5-year average, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

Jim Renn told WTKM about the greatest thing for farmers this time of the year.

"I think to reap the benefits. We put that seed in the ground and dependent on Mother Nature, giving us that awesome weather. We have been pretty lucky around here."

Over 90 percent of the corn crop has reached the dent stage,  according to the USDA.
