The 113th running of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Cross Country Championships and the 51st Annual Girls Cross Country Championships will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
The boys and girls will both run a 5,000-meter course. The following is a listing of the scheduled start times for each race:
Boys

12:35 p.m. - Division 2
1:10 p.m. - Division 1
Girls

2:25 p.m. - Division 2
3:05 p.m. - Division 1
There are 20 teams contending for the State championship in Division 1 for boys and girls, and 16 teams competing for the boys and girls Divisions 2 and 3 team titles. Teams competing for the titles qualified last weekend at their respective sectional meets. The top two teams in each of the 10 Division 1 sectionals and the top two teams from each of the eight Divisions 2 and 3 sectionals advanced. In addition to the qualifying teams, the first five individual finishers at their respective sectionals, who are not a member of a qualifying team, also qualified for the State Meet.
This year’s Division 1 field features nine of the top 10 squads that competed last year. Three-time defending champion Stevens Point is back to contend for a fourth-straight championship. The other programs in this year’s meet that finished in the top eight a year ago are Marquette (2nd), Green Bay Preble (3rd), DeForest (4th), Hartford Union High School (5th), and Madison West (6th), Oconomowoc (8th), Hudson (9th) and De Pere (10th). The Panthers return four runners that compiled 77 team points to win the title a year ago. Marquette appears to have the experience to contend for the team title with six returning runners from last season’s team.
The Division 1 individual competition has four runners back in the field that placed in the top eight a year ago. Senior Grady Lenn of De Pere is the top returner, racing to a runner-up finish last season after placing third in 2023 and seventh in 2022. Other contenders for the crown include junior Will Pongonis of Eau Claire Memorial, who placed sixth after finishing 29th in 2023; senior Lucas Tanner of DeForest, who placed seventh after coming in 24th in 2023; and senior Reed Grotenhuis of Slinger, who was eighth after placing 32nd in 2023. Sectional champions that will compete for a position on the awards stand are senior Ben Weston of Arrowhead; junior Noah Gailey of Hartford Union High School; senior JeMekhi Tally of Homestead, who was 16th last year; junior Ryan Keller of Hudson, who placed 11th last season; junior Ethan Mattek of Wauwatosa East, who was 17th in 2024; and seniors Pavel Vorontsov of Oregon and Landon Franke of Racine Horlick.
The top four finishers in last year’s Girls State Meet return in pursuit of the team championship; furthermore, 12 of the 20 qualifying teams participated last year, including the top two teams in Division 2 last year moving up a division. Neenah, the defending team champion in Division 1, returns a squad with plenty of experience returning to contend for a repeat title. The Rockets have five runners back that earned the gold last season. However, Wauwatosa East is also loaded for a run at the title with six returning racers from last season’s runner-up squad. The same can be said of Slinger, which also returns six runners following a third-place finish a year ago after the program won the championship in 2023 and finished runner-up in 2022.

The Slinger High School football team returns to the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season. But this year, they take the field as defending state champs on Friday, October 24 in a Level 1 game against a familiar foe. The Owls host West Bend West at 7 p.m. They met in the regular season on September 12 and Slinger earned a 28-14 road win.
The Owls are coming off the kind of season you dream about.
The score was 30-30 after Michael Thiede's 2-yard touchdown plunge last season, with 3:29 remaining in the WIAA Division 2 State Championship game at Camp Randall Stadium. Cole Martin's extra point gave the Slinger High School football team the lead over Rice Lake. The Owls sealed a 31-30 win and their second state title in the program's history.
Slinger won the Division 3 state championship in 1998.
Thiede threw for 181 yards and one touchdown and was equally dangerous on his feet. The Owls' quarterback scampered for 48 yards and two touchdowns. His last TD may have been the biggest of his impressive high school football career.
It was the kind of season you dream about. Undefeated, state champs and a North Shore Conference title.
Slinger Head Football Coach Bill Jacklin was named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association/Green bay Packers High School Coach of the Year and was selected as the Don Shula National High School Coach of the Year by the NFL for the NFC.
"It wasn't so much going undefeated," Jacklin said. "It was the way we played together all season. We played as a team and they responded to the ups and downs in every game. We knew early on that this was a special group."
The Owls' talented quarterback graduated, along with their two top receivers - Lucas Sonn and Brayden Schnorenberg. Thiede completed 69 percent of his passes last season for 2,113 and 23 touchdowns. Sonn had 38 receptions for 836 yards and 11 touchdowns while Schnorenberg collected 36 catches for 457 and two touchdowns.
Running back Kobe Hendricks rushed for 44 yards and one touchdown in last season's state championship game. This season, Hendricks' senior year has been impressive with 1,564 yards rushing. He will be counted on for another playoff run.
Slinger's 6'-2" senior quarterback Jeffery Ford passed for 258 yards and three touchdowns against West Bend West earlier this season.
The Owls' defense will be tested in their Level 1 game, as they face an impressive rushing attack from the Spartans. West Bend West's senior running back Noah Reinhart ran for 200 yards in their regular season matchup.

Slinger's Reed Grotenhuis was also named first team All Conference.
The Hartford Union High School football team is back in the playoffs. It's familiar territory for the Orioles. Every season since 2016, Hartford has qualified.
The Orioles earned a Level 1 matchup with West De Pere on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
"I'm proud of our tradition here at Hartford," said John Redders, head coach at Hartford Union High School. "The playoffs are special, it's always one of our goals with our program. Moving on and handling the pressure that comes with it, we take a lot of pride in that."
Many great playoff memories to look back on, like the 2019 season with a Level 3 appearance. Quarterback Jacob Frantl passed for 263 yards and two touchdowns in their Level 1 win against Oregon, 31-0. Hartford advanced and thanks to their tenacious defense, defeated Holmen, 26-0. Justus Ojo finished with 11 total tackles, one quarterback sack and one forced fumble. Level 3 turned into a hard-fought loss against Waunakee, 49-21 which ended their season.
The 2021 football season was also special for the Orioles' football team. It included a Level 4 game after playoff wins over Kaukauna, 14-13 and De Pere, 43-42. AJ Pepin rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns in Hartford's Level 3 win over Pulaski, 35-28 with their season ending with a loss to Waunakee, 27-20.
Here's hoping for more great memories this season and a long playoff run.

The #1 seed in doubles was issued to the sister tandem of senior Lizzie Stuckslager and sophomore Amelia Stuckslager of Divine Savior Holy Angels. Lizzie is a four-time State qualifier. She won the 2022 and 2023 doubles championships with a different partner and advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play last year. She seeks to become just the third girls player to win three doubles titles. Amelia finished runner-up in doubles play last season with a different partner.
Senior Sarah Neubert and junior Isabella Heidenberger of Arrowhead have compiled a 23-0 record this season. Prior to last year’s triumph, Neubert qualified with a different partner in 2023 and finished sixth. Heidenberger qualified in the singles bracket in 2023 and advanced to the second round before being defeated.
Hartford Union High School's Jenna Martin and Addyson Navarre earned their spot at the state tournament.

A number of Hartford Union High School student-athletes have qualified for state.
Junior golfer Rita Kuepper qualified for a third consecutive year to the WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament. Kuepper also earned first place in the Division I Sectional 6 tournament by shooting a 72. Arrowhead's Addison Johannes finished second with a 73.

The Hartford Union High School football team continues to improve, as the Orioles prepare for a Week 8 matchup at Cedarburg Friday night, October 10.
Hartford (2-5, 2-3 NSC) is coming off a hard-fought win over Nicolet on Friday, October 3, 30-27. John Redders, Hartford Union High School's head coach, liked his team's effort.
"A win is a win, we will take it any day and we are proud of our kids with the way they battled through the four quarters last week."
Hartford's senior running back Sully McManigal rushed for 157 yards on 19 carries against the Knights.
Coach Redders says the offensive line is playing well.
"I think those guys definitely deserve a lot of credit. Sam Johnston by far right now stood out as the most consistent. He has been pretty much in the eighty percent to ninety percent area, week after week, of getting his job done. We rate our guys on a percent and if they are seventy-five percent or better, they have won or have done the job. Jaxon Rolsma as well, another guy who has been reliable on the line for us."
It's the first year for Matt McDonnell as head coach of Cedarburg (2-5, 2-3 NSC). So far, he likes the work ethic of the players.
"The most fun is how receptive the kids are to all of the coaching. There are things to improve on, but the core nucleus is there. We have a really good group of senior leaders. It's been great, we are working hard."
The Bulldogs have won two in a row against the Orioles. The last time Hartford beat Cedarburg was in 2022, behind 322 total rushing yards. Noah Deibert rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries, and one touchdown while Quinten Hornada finished with 94 yards rushing on 11 carries and two touchdowns for the Orioles in that game three years ago.
104.9 WTKM will carry all the live action of this North Shore Conference matchup. Jared Bublitz has the call. Pregame is scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m. with the kickoff at 7 p.m. We will be streaming live on wtkmnews.com.

Week 8 of the high school football season presents a significant matchup in the North Shore Conference. Slinger (6-1, 5-0 NSC) travels to Homestead (7-0, 5-0 NSC) Friday night, October 10.
There are some fond memories of this game for the Owls from last year. It included a 22-21 win one year ago in the regular season, on October 10 at Slinger High School. The Highlanders scored with 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Tommy O'Hagan's 7-yard touchdown throw to Jonah Wenzler gave Homestead a 21-14 lead.
"There were many moments last year, including the Homestead game with the touchdown run at the end and the two-point conversion, where we played so well together," Owls' Head Football Coach Bill Jacklin recalled. "It showed the kind of confidence the kids had and how important it will be again this season for us."
Slinger showed plenty of swagger with a game-winning drive, which was capped off by quarterback Michael Thiede's 2-yard touchdown run. The Owls showed more bravado by going for the win with a two-point conversion, instead of the extra point - which would have tied the score. Lucas Sonn's complete pass to Chase Leverance in the end zone converted the two-point conversion and sealed the win.
The last time Homestead defeated Slinger was September 1, 2023. Thiede connected with Mark Leidel on a 15-yard touchdown pass for Slinger, with 5:36 remaining in the game. It cut into the Highlanders' lead, but it wasn't enough. Homestead held on for a 24-21 win.
Homestead Head Football Coach Drake Zortman says the line play determines their success.
"It all starts up front for us. Our largest area of experience coming back was our offensive line. We have some three-year guys, couple of two-year guys and their experience has carried us. Our running backs are leaning on those guys."
And confidence doesn't hurt either.
Dodgeland High School cross country runners earned seven medals at the Terry Krall Cross Country Invitational.
Three talented members of the boys team finished in the top 20. Calvin Schaalma placed ninth, London Rennhack in 13th and Jaxon Sikora earned a 19th place finish.
The Dodgeland boys cross country team ran hard for a third place team finish.
Four Dodgeland girls cross country runners finished in the top 20. Delaney Rennhack and Brooklyn Borchardt placed first and second. Sierra Wegener finished in 14th and Brina Draeger finished 17th.
It was a special honor for Slinger High School Cross Country Coach Terry Krall at the invitational, which was named after the national girls cross country coach of the year by the National Federation of High School Association, held at Heritage Trails County Park in Polk.
Krall was selected Girls Cross Country State Coach of the Year and will be inducted into the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association's Hall of Fame this year.
Coach Krall has been named District 6 Coach of the Year by the WCCCA four times.
After coaching track and field, and cross country at the junior high and high school levels in Wisconsin for over 50 years, Krall won his first state championship with co-coach John Strand in 2023. Both coaches were instrumental in leading the Owls to a State Girls Cross Country title.

A group of Hartford Union High School football players volunteered and passed on their passion for the game. The players had the opportunity to serve at the Green Bay Packers Football Outreach Camp, hosted by Honor Elementary.
Hartford Head Football Coach John Redders told WTKM that it meant a lot to the football program.
"It's a neat experience with some of our local schools like Richfield and Erin, and the Honor School District. They had the group from the Green Bay Packers come in, doing some of their outreach work. They go around to area schools and hold activity camps to help motivate kids to exercise."
12 junior varsity football players from Hartford Union High School helped with setting up drills and taught grade school students how to block and tackle. The student campers also learned how to throw and run with a football.
"The best thing I walk away with, is not just seeing the energy from the younger kids but I love it when the teachers come up and compliment our players from Hartford with the way they conducted themselves in such a classy way."
This special event gave students from the second through fifth grade the chance to test their skills through fun football drills and obstacle courses. It included relay races, kicking, catching and even diving for a touchdown.

Bill Jacklin continues to make Slinger proud.
The Slinger High School head football coach reached 100 career wins on September 19. The Owls defeated Nicolet, 41-33 and improved to 3-0 in the North Shore Conference and 5-1 overall.
It's an impressive milestone, worthy of headlines and stories. All of the attention is well deserved, but Coach Jacklin will always redirect the narrative.
"It's not about me, it's everyone in the program. All of the passion and hard work put in. 'All In as One' is our foundation for Slinger football."
Coach Jacklin, a 1988 Slinger High School graduate, told WTKM Sports that his coaching career has been a dream come true. He came back to his hometown, got involved in coaching and landed his dream job in 2011.
"When I was named head coach here, we had big goals," Jacklin recalls. "We wanted to set the bar high every season, expecting to compete for a conference championship and expecting to make the playoffs."
They started accomplishing their goals, and winning. In fact, 47 wins to be exact over the last six seasons. The Slinger football team advanced to Level 2 of the playoffs three consecutive years before a Level 3 matchup with Sun Prairie East in 2023, which proved to be a defining moment. They made it to Level 3 for the first time in Jacklin's tenure. It was the next step.
The Cardinals held a 21-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Owls, 35-6 in that 2023 Level 3 playoff matchup. The loss hurt, especially when you make it that far. But it also served as motivation in the offseason and would lead to a WIAA Division 2 State Championship the next year.
The wins continue to come this season. All In as One and making Slinger proud.
