Sportsmanship Award for Watertown Luther Prep

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association has selected the team Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2025 fall State Tournaments.

The recipients of the awards are Cochrane-Fountain City in football, McFarland in boys’ soccer, Watertown Luther Prep in girls’ volleyball and Altoona in girls’ team tennis.

The WIAA/Rural Insurance Sportsmanship Award is presented to one school program and community–or communities in the case of cooperative programs–in each of the State team tournaments that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship. Award winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands and spectators.

The State Girls Volleyball Tournament was held at the Resch Center, in Green Bay on November 5-8. The Phoenix earn the school’s first Sportsmanship Award in any sport. Luther Prep’s sportsmanship was showcased during a 25-17, 25-20, 25-13 sweep over Luther in the Division 3 semifinal and its 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 21-25 loss to Manitowoc Lutheran in the championship game. Schools receiving honorable mention were Barron, Blair-Taylor, Florence, Heritage Christian, Luther, Luxemburg-Casco, Montello and Newman Catholic.

Hartford's Nikki Reinwald runs through obstacles

Sometimes the obstacles we face push us to go farther than we ever dreamed. It's the challenges that help us appreciate our accomplishments.

Hartford Union High School's Nikki Reinwald knows all about it. The junior cross country phenom qualified individually for a second consecutive year for the WIAA state cross country championships at the Ridges Golf Course, in Wisconsin Rapids on November 1.

"It was an incredible opportunity, just to go and compete," said Reinwald. "It was great to be around a group of girls that try to improve each day and care about their sport. It's a great place to be and it's lovely to be around. I wish I could go back again."

She'll have another chance next season.

Nikki finished in 19:33, which was the fastest 5k recorded at a state cross country meet by any Hartford Union High School girl. She finished 61st out of 190 runners.

It's impressive, considering her season was up in the air last summer. Reinwald wasn't sure if she would be able to run. And to understand why, we need to go back to her eighth grade year.

"Starting in eighth grade, I had my first ACL tear with my knee," Nikki recalled. "I wasn't sure if I would be able to run my freshman year, but I did. Last year, I tore it again less than a year later. During this year's soccer season, my knee was swollen in May and there was no explanation for it."

A knee scope was the next step in her recovery, which involved examining, treating and eventually removing some tissue. The swelling was reduced, which was great news.

Reinwald went through physical therapy last summer and didn't start running until late August of this year. She was cleared in September.

"This season, I was so unsure about things," Nikki admitted. "I didn't think I was going to run for the first half of the season. I didn't think I would be able to compete. I just stayed positive and put in the work."

It paid off. After missing the first two meets of the season, Reinwald's first chance to compete with her teammates was September 20 at Tendick Park, in Saukville. The rain created a wet and muddy course, which forced Nikki to run conservatively. She made it through and her season had begun.

She continued to get stronger in the next few weeks leading up to the North Shore Conference meet. Reinwald's sub-20-minute time of 19:30 was a big moment.

"The conference meet was great, it was the first time I had reached into the nineteens again. I was so happy. Our team was doing really well. I felt like I was back."

Her First Team All-North Shore Conference honor provided plenty of momentum into sectionals at Meadow Links Golf Course, in Manitowoc on October 25. Nikki delivered one of her best performances (19:10) and broke her own school record.

"This season has been like a fever dream. It was a time to be happy and be in the moment. I did not take anything for granted. My focus was to be competitive, have fun and don't let anything slip."

Reinwald joins an elite group of runners at Hartford Union High School, becoming just the third girl in the history of the cross country program to qualify for state a second time.

Chess champions

Certainly one of the highlights this year at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School is a state championship in chess.

The KML Chess team earned the Division 1 state title at the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Championship. The Chargers were seeded eighth out of 12 teams. Challenging wins were against Wisconsin Lutheran, Muskego, and the impressive Chesterton Academy Green Bay for the Division 1 championship.

The Chargers chess team won the Division 2 state championships in 2023 and 2024.

Hartford's Quinn Meinerz set to play against hometown team

Quinn Meinerz, a Hartford Union High School graduate and All-Pro guard for the Denver Broncos, prepares to play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, December 14 at 3:25 p.m.

Meinerz was named a team captain last season.

The Hartford native was named a first-team All-Pro at right guard for the 2024 season.

Hartford Union High School head football coach John Redders told WTKM about what he thinks about, in regard to Quinn's high school career.

"A very talented, smart football player here, who also had a lot of success on the wrestling team and track team for us. I remember the offensive production and all of the yards from our running backs when Quinn played on the offensive line."

Meinerz earned honorable mention all-state honors as an offensive and defensive lineman for Hartford Union High School.

He was selected by the Broncos in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2021.

Hartford wrestlers compete in Fargo

Only the few really know what "Fargo" is all about.

The best talent in high school wrestling gathered for the U.S. Marine Corps Junior and 16U Nationals, often referred to as "Fargo." The best of the best met on the mat and it did not disappoint.

The tournament was held at the Fargodome, July 10 - 19 on the campus of North Dakota State University. It included men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle. It is not an open event. All wrestlers who wish to participate must go through their respective state to qualify. There is a freestyle state meet in early May, where the top three wrestlers automatically make it in. There are other opportunities to place, through various tournaments.

A total of 7,300 high school wrestlers from around the country competed at "Fargo," which is the largest wrestling tournament in the world for high school-aged wrestlers. It's a force to be reckoned with - a real pressure cooker with a high level of intensity contained in a dome.

Two of those talented wrestlers are from Hartford and competed in freestyle. Parker Neu (150) and Lincoln Flayter (126) were there and seemed to embrace the pressure.

"Even though I wrestled there before, you still feel the nerves," Flayter admitted, regarding his fifth time at this prestigious tournament. "It's big and there are a lot of people. It amazes me every time I walk into that building. The one thing you know stepping in there, it's going to be a tough match. You are not going to get an easy match there. Everyone is the top in their state. They are way more physical than most of the people I wrestled during the high school season. It's a dog fight, you have to take it and give it."

Lincoln started wrestling in kindergarten and graduated from Hartford Union High School this year. He will be moving on to wrestle at UW Parkside. He told WTKM Sports how his "Fargo" experience helped him improve. It was a valuable experience and a chance to work on the mental side of wrestling.

The Pre-Fargo wrestling camp, which was held in River Falls, Wisconsin is organzied to prepare these athletes for the junior national tournament. Many states, like Wisconsin organize the mandatory team camps for those competing at Fargo with wrestle-off opportunities for athletes to earn spots.

It was the second time around for Neu, who discussed the importance of coaching throughout the entire experience and what a difference it made.

"Right away when you get to Fargo, it's a big arena and a lot of wrestlers. It's a mental shock, especially if it's your first or second year. Getting adjusted to that and having the coaching staff that works with us, keeping you in check, stressing to us that it's just another wrestling match at the end of the day. I really worked on staying calm, staying focused and staying in the match. The mental adjustments were huge."

The Hartford Union High School junior, who also started wrestling in kindergarten, finished 3-2 at Fargo. Those three wins were earned on the front side of the bracket.

Flayter wrapped up his impressive high school career, which included winning over 150 matches, with two matches at Fargo.

It's deer season for the Slinger High School Outdoors Club

Area high school students with a passion for deer hunting season prepared for a great hunt.

The Slinger High School Outdoors Club Deer Season Kick Off night was well attended and a big success. A record turn out of 80 students and parents attended the meeting.

A three station rotation was presented with guest speakers, and a raffle .

Their guest speakers took the time to further educate on a wide variety of topics.

Ben Gehring from Gehrings meat market taught about how to properly take care of venison after harvest as well as how to process a deer.

Kurt Kowaleski discussed rifle season tips, tricks, and techniques for all hunters to use, especially those that may not own their own land.

Steve Swiertz, our Washington county conservation officer, brought in two fellow wardens to discuss safety and ethics to apply while in the woods as well as a question and answer segment to help hunters understand the rule book.

Good luck to all hunters for a safe and successful deer season.
