Trap shooting at a high level

It has been quite a year for Holly Elsinger, of the St. Lawrence Eager Beavers 4-H Club, as she continues to add to her impressive trap shooting record for 2025.

Elsinger was recognized as the Hartford Conservation Club's High Female Trap Shooter.

She received a number of high honors with her keen eye and great composure while competing in the Kettle Moraine Conference.

                      * Conference Varsity Champion

                      * High Overall Female

                      * Sectional High Female Shooter

                      * Sectional Champion

                      * All-Scholastic Team

Holly's honors continue on the state level, as the Wisconsin State Shoot Singles Junior Champion along with All-Academic Team honors.

Elsinger is a member of the 4-H Nationals 2025 Wisconsin Shotgun Team.

Hartford's Sam Weatherhead is the 2025 State Open Champion

Sam Weatherhead, of Hartford, claimed this year's Suter Ward Group at Morgan Stanley Wisconsin State Open title at Blackwolf Run in Kohler on Wednesday, August 20. Weatherhead went into the final day in a four-way tie for the lead.
A 3-under-par 69 in the morning then helped him earn a one-shot, as he headed into the fourth and final round in the afternoon. However, Weatherhead had plenty of challengers throughout the 36-hole marathon finish, as five different golfers held the lead. Included in that bunch were two former champions, Harrison Ott and Cameron Huss.
When it mattered the most though, Weatherhead came up clutch during his final nine holes. After a challenging front nine, finishing with four bogeys in a five hole stretch, he made a huge 15-foot eagle putt on the par-5 11th and then two more birdies after that point. The biggest birdie came on the 195-yard par-3 17th. While tied with Ott and Huss, he flushed an 8-iron from 195 yards to just a few feet. The birdie gave him the outright lead. He then sealed the deal with a great two-putt across a ridge on the difficult par-4 18th.

Weatherhead is the first Wisconsin PGA Associate to win the Wisconsin State Open title since Jim Schuman in 1996.

High expectations for Hartford football

The Hartford Union High School football team is preparing for a new season.

The Orioles finished 5-5 last season, including fourth place in the North Shore Conference at 4-3. Homestead ended Hartford's season, 28-8 in a Level 1 playoff game on October 25.

The Orioles' quarterback Bennett Klages graduated. He made his mark last season, and not just on the field according to Hartford Head Football Coach John Redders.

"Bennett is a good example of how you play quarterback at Hartford. His decision making and leadership were at a high level. He always put the team first."

Klages completed 53.2 percent of his passes for 1,285 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Quarterback Logan Laufenburg returns for his senior season at Hartford Union High School. He played in two games last season and completed 85 percent of his passes with two touchdowns.

The Orioles' top three running backs are also lost to graduation. EJ Brown, Adam Zuern and Aden Fry will be missed. Michael Smith is back for his senior season after rushing for 99 yards last year and will be joined by 240-pound running back Ayden Grulke.

The kind of season you dream about

The score was 30-30 after Michael Thiede's 2-yard touchdown plunge last season, with 3:29 remaining in the WIAA Division 2 State Championship game at Camp Randall Stadium. Cole Martin's extra point gave the Slinger High School football team the lead over Rice Lake. The Owls sealed a 31-30 win and their second state title in the program's history.

Slinger won the Division 3 state championship in 1998.

Thiede threw for 181 yards and one touchdown and was equally dangerous on his feet. The Owls' quarterback scampered for 48 yards and two touchdowns. His last TD may have been the biggest of his impressive high school football career.

It was the kind of season you dream about. Undefeated, state champs and a North Shore Conference title.

Slinger Head Football Coach Bill Jacklin was named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association/Green bay Packers High School Coach of the Year and was selected as the Don Shula National High School Coach of the Year by the NFL for the NFC.

"It wasn't so much going undefeated," Jacklin said. "It was the way we played together all season. We played as a team and they responded to the ups and downs in every game. We knew early on that this was a special group."

The Owls' talented quarterback graduated, along with their two top receivers - Lucas Sonn and Brayden Schnorenberg. Thiede completed 69 percent of his passes last season for 2,113 and 23 touchdowns. Sonn had 38 receptions for 836 yards and 11 touchdowns while Schnorenberg collected 36 catches for 457 and two touchdowns.

Running back Kobe Hendricks rushed for 44 yards and one touchdown in last season's state championship game. He returns for his senior season after leading the team in rushing last year with 1,006 total yards and 11 touchdowns. Hendricks averaged 7.2 yards per carry.

The Slinger football team opens up the season with a home game against Menomonee Falls on Friday, August 22 at 7 p.m.

West Bend West's football team continues to improve

West Bend West head football coach Taylor Ripplinger took over in 2022. The Spartans finished 2-7 that season, followed by 0-9 in Ripplinger's second season. Things could have taken a turn for the worst, instead...the coaches and players kept working. They were all in and it paid off with a 4-5 season. The improvement was evident last year.

There is more good news for West Bend West football, as Collin Grass returns for his junior season. The Spartans' quarterback completed 57 percent of his passes for 745 yards and six touchdowns. He only had one interception last year as a sophomore.

Leading rusher Noah Reinhart is back for his senior season. He rushed for 973 total yards last year with seven touchdowns.

New football coach for West Bend East

West Bend East has a new football coach. Former Menomonee Falls football coach Dan Lutz takes over the program.

The Suns finished 0-9 last season.

East's quarterback Colton Multerer returns for his junior year after gaining valuable experience last season.

He was also quick on his feet, rushing for 64 yards and one touchdown while averaging seven yards a carry.

Running back Kingston Grisolono is back for his junior year, after 59 yards rushing as a sophomore last season. Grisolono scored two touchdowns and averaged 14.8 yards per carry.

Another talented junior for the Indians is Anthony Coleman. The wide receiver finished with 15 receptions for 150 yards last season.

Johnny Hooker returns for his senior season. The 6-1 wide out averaged 20 yards per catch with one touchdown last year.

Gabriel Halopka is back for his senior season, after leading the team in tackles last year. The talented linebacker finished with 61 tackles and two tackles for loss. He forced one fumble.

Harper Hughes is also returning after leading the team with 49 catches for 796 yards and seven touchdowns last year.

Linebacker Brendan Foley is back on defense, which is great news for Arrowhead fans. Last season's leading tackler is set for an impressive senior season after 131 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.
